I recommend… Part 1

Since Christmas is around the corner, I thought I’d do a post about which books I would recommend. This is part one, with part two coming up the following weekend. In this post, I recommend 6 books for fantasy lovers, lovers of a complex storyline, and SciFi nerds. So read on, and enjoy!

For the Fantasy lovers…

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

This is the first book in the Grisha trilogy. Although I’ve only read this book in the series so far, I can already tell this in going to be a great series.  When Alina Starkov discovers she has powers like the Grisha, she is thrust into a world she thought she would have no part in.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

Again, this is the first book in what I believe will be a trilogy. Only this book is released so far. Sarah J Maas is one of my favourite authors, so I will always recommend her books to everyone. This is a fairytale retelling of Beauty and the Beast, complete with badass characters and an enchanting world.

For the people who love complex story lines…

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

I’ve read this book twice now, and I just love the story. It is set in a world where a disease is killing children, but the children who live develop abilities. The government is scared of these abilities, so all the children are sent to rehabilitation camps. And the story goes from there… It’s a really interesting read.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

Here’s another favourite of mine! I just adore this series. There are only two books out so far, but in the end I believe this will be a seven book series. It really hard to sort into a genre – I see it as fantasy, bookshops file it under SciFi, whereas others think it’s dystopian. Whatever it is, it’s an amazing book! So addictive. It’s set in a London where clairvoyants live, but being clairvoyant is against the law. I really don’t know how to even begin describing this story, so you’ll be better off looking at the Goodreads page.

For the SciFi nerds…

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Cinder is the first book in a SciFi fairytale retelling series. I’ve read the first three, and will be continuing with the last book and the novella soon (hopefully). But just think…fairytales…and SciFi? Doesn’t seem to fit, does it? BUT IT DOES! It really does! This series just gets better with every book. The story is based around the problem of Queen Levana, who is the Monarch on the moon. Yes, there’s a race of people on the moon, called Lunars. With SciFi and fairytales combined, it makes a really interesting story.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

This story starts as a war between two planets, and a whole bunch of refugees leaving on three different spaceships. But this isn’t just your typical book. The way it’s formatted makes this book special. The story is told through emails, messages, camera footage, documents etc, piecing together this story page by page. I really loved this book, even though I’m only just getting into SciFi. This will be a trilogy called The Illuminae Files. The only thing I would say about this is to DEFINITELY get it in a physical copy, because the formatting makes it difficult to read on an E-reader.
