The Circus arrives without warning.
No announcements proceed it.
It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.
I just absolutely adore this book. I knew from the first time I read it that I will reread it countless times. Even the second time round it felt just as magical.
The main thing about this book that I love is the writing style. Every description was so detailed and elegant, it was captivating. I read countless pages without even realizing just how many I had gotten through. Every so often a snippet would come along between chapters where it would be told from your point of view, describing what you see and feel. I love these scenes, it makes me feel even more connected to the story, like I’m actually living it.
“With your ticket in hand, you follow the continuous line of patrons into the circus, watching the rhythmic motion of the black-and-white clock as you wait.”
It’s a complex story. There are many characters involved and with each chapter the time frame jumps to a different scene. If you are easily confused by switching time periods and keeping up with characters, then this book might be a tough read for you. But it’s honestly done in a way that is easy to follow – in my opinion at least.
Erin Morgenstern’s way with words is stunning and truly magical. The settings throughout the story were vivid in my imagination and helped me grown very attached to the story. Since it’s set in the late 1800’s/ early 1900’s, the magic seems all the more intricate and almost secret, since everything about this time period is more elegant and classy. The clothes the characters wear, the way they react to each other, the way the surroundings are described. Everything is just so detailed.
“Most of the passenger cars are lined with thick patterned carpets, upholstered in velvets in burgundies and violets and creams, as though they have been dipped in a sunset, hovering at twilight and holding onto the colours before they fade to midnight and stars.”
I mean seriously, that quote is describing a carpet. A CARPET. How those words are woven together just blows my mind.
The actual story line is imaginative and really gripping. I’ve never read another book like it. I grew very attached to the characters. I loved them all for their uniqueness and the elements they brought to the story. By the end I was feeling very satisfied and content.
I could honestly rave about this book all day. If you like books that are magical and are likely to stay with you forever, then I couldn’t recommend this book enough.
“The finest of pleasures are always the unexpected ones.”
Rated 5//5 stars!

Have you read this book? Let me know what you think!
I know a few people find it difficult to get into because the premise can become confusing, but I believe it’s meant to be that way. But I do understand that this book isn’t for everyone.
So if you’ve read it, do you love it as much as I do? Do you not like it?
If you’ve not read it, is it on your TBR list? (it should be)
Thank you for reading!

I love the Night Circus! It is problem one of my favorite books I have read this year. I remember when I was reading it I was working at a publisher in NY. I was on a crowded train and as a guy was getting off standing next to me he said “I hope you enjoy it. That is such a great book!” He was absolutely right!

Oh I so wanna read it! Is it teen fiction? I can’t find it in my largest bookshop nearby but that’s just in YA.

I don’t think it’s technically classed as YA/teens. I’ve never seen it in that section anyway. The only thing I can think of is that it’d be under fantasy or just fiction.

This book is one of my absolute favorites, which was a little surprising to me because I usually get confused pretty easy and lack patience for descriptive writing but this one was just so magical, like you said. Now I want to reread this one!

I was so glad I discovered it a couple of years ago. I wasn’t expecting much from it because I’d never heard of it before so it was really unexpected (that’s why I added the last quote). I see more people reading it now and it makes me happy to see people love it as much as I do!
