The Wicked and The Divine Volumes 1 & 2

This is my first review for a graphic novel! I’ve been gradually getting into them but still only have a few. I recently received Volume 2 of The Wicked and The Divine as an unexpected gift, so I decided to reread Volume 1 before going onto the second, and review them both here. Since they’re graphic novels the review will probably be shorter, but I’ll be reviewing both volumes in this one post.

Volume 1: The Faust Act

I remember wanting to start this series so much because of the art style. It is STUNNING. It really is the main reason why I like these graphic novels as much as I do. The drawings are really elegant looking and highly detailed, with colours used to set the scene/atmosphere.

The photo above shows the first picture you see when you open Volume 1. Just look how amazing it is!

I found the story quite interesting – there’s sort of a mix between Gods and their way of life, and crime. I wasn’t expecting the crime element, but it’s not boring at all, as I would have assumed. I do admit the story can be slightly confusing at times, since it seems to jump around a lot to try and involve all the characters. It picks up at the halfway point, and it’s easy to get caught up in the story. I will just say that there are some rude references, so this may not be suitable for younger readers.

I enjoyed this graphic novel very much. It’s a believable concept since the world is modern and just like ours – I mean, Snapchat is mentioned at one point. It’s literally just our world with this God reincarnation type issue. Once you get past the confusing parts, it’s a really enjoyable story.

Volume 2: Fandemonium

I enjoyed this one even more than the first. It seemed to go at a faster pace, since it was dealing with the after-effects of the first volume. It carried on from the first volume at a believable rate, instead of just jumping ahead and seeming like a different story all together.

Again, the art style was just amazing. I can’t praise it enough.

I was shocked by the plot twists. Actually shocked by them. I didn’t see them coming at all. This is definitely a difference from the first volume, sine it didn’t bring out much emotion in me. But this one…ugh. At the end I literally shouted “WHAT?“, thinking there were more pages because THAT CAN’T BE THE END. 

This volume made a lot more sense, and I didn’t find myself confused at all. Part of the backstory of the Gods was revealed this time, which I enjoyed because it helped me understand the whole idea of the story.

I haven’t looked into it yet, but I’m really hoping there’s going to be a Volume 3. I’d love this story to continue on.
