The Lies of a Bookworm

the lies of a bookworm

First of all, I apologize for there being no blog post yesterday. I was recovering from a bad migraine and couldn’t look at screens for long.

Now, onto today…

It’s dawned on me that we, as bookworms, while we appreciate words a lot, we tend to bend and twist them into lies.

Now now, before you get offended, hear me out.

When I say “lies”, I mean in the way that we tell ourselves fibs. We tell ourselves little white lies that we all know we’re going to ignore.

Here are just the common few:

“Just one more chapter…”

“I’ll read just one more chapter before I go to sleep” you tell yourself as you continue flipping through the pages.

*Chapter ends*

“WAIT. I wasn’t ready. I can’t leave it there!…Just one more chapter.”

The loop continues.

We all know that a strange sleeping pattern is a common problem of a bookworm. Well, this is exactly why.

No, I’m not running out of room on my bookshelves.

Person in room: “Woah. You’ve sure got a lot of books.”

You: “Haha. Yeah. Hey look I got these ones today too!”

Person: “Wait, really? Shouldn’t you, like, stop buying books until you have more storage? It’s pretty full in here…”

You: “What do you mean? I’m not running out of space!”

*adds new books to already overflowing stack on desk*

You: “See! There’s still plenty of room!”

*books fall over*

I’m all too familiar with this one. I’ve been needing new shelves for about a year now, but does that stop me from buying them? Pffft no.

I’m not going to get that book yet, I still have over 100 books on my TBR shelf.

*New amazing looking book is released*

“Meh. I’ve still got all these books to read yet. I’ll buy it in a couple of months maybe.”

*Continues to see hype*

“I mean, I just bought some new books as well. Now I have over 100 books on my TBR. I#ll wait.”

*Goes to book shop and sees book*

“IT’S SO PRETTY.”

“But I said I’ll wait…”

“Oh stuff it I’M BUYING IT.”

And this is the reason so many bookworms don’t have much money in their bank account.

I don’t judge a book by it’s cover.

You: “Pfft, I never judge a book by it’s cover. A book could have a really horrible design and be the most amazing story inside!”

*Sees ugly cover with cheesy posing model glaring at you with dramatic woodland scene behind*

You: “Oh god. I’m not getting that one. Definitely doesn’t seem like the sort of thing I’d enjoy.”

Person: “You haven’t even read the synopsis – “

You: “I can just tell.”

*Sees insanely beautiful cover with gold hardware and shiny typography*

You: “OH MY GOD I MUST HAVE IT”

Because let’s be honest, we all get the prettier covers if we can. If there’s a book that has multiple editions, we will try and get the cover we prefer. Or we will cringe away from covers we don’t like, even before reading the synopsis. Or we get lured in by stunning design. It’s impossible not to judge a book by it’s cover!

I read to relax.

Person: “So why do you read so much?”

You: “Oh, you know, I read to relax.”

*Later that evening*

“Hmm, I’ll do some reading now I think. Should be relaxing.”

*10 minutes later*

“WAIT. WHAT. EXCUSE ME?!?”

“HOW did that just happen?”

*Frantically flips pages and gets to the end of the book*

“NO.”

“THAT CAN’T BE THE END!”

*Cries*

*pterodactyl screech*

*Throws book across room*

There’s nothing relaxing about reading. Books toy with our emotions, they rip us apart and spit us back out, making us want to scream and throw the book across the room while ranting to everyone in the world. Relaxing? Oh how we kid ourselves.

So that’s it for this post!

Are these common problems for you? How many of these fibs (lies) can you relate to?

Are you like me and just fail to listen to your own words?

Are there any other lies you can think of that we bookworms tend to tell ourselves?

Let me know in the comments!

Until next time…

  1. Haha, oh my goodness this was hilarious!! SO true about the book buying, that is 100% me. I feel like my TBR would be so much smaller if I wasn’t continuously sucked in to all the hype going on around some books. Ah well. And when people comment on how many books I have I just want to smother them and be like, no, the correct response is what a perfect amount of books I have. Nothing is more annoying than someone telling you you have enough books. Pah! There is no such thing.

    Great post!! 🙂

  2. No, I’m not running out of room on my bookshelves.

That would be the husband…a year ago…to me…

    Me: Nawwwww, we’re tooootally fine!

    NOW, it’s more like,

“Yeah, okay, so we’re totally out of shelves. That’s okay! There’s still the floor.” XD

Great post–I really enjoyed reading this! ❤

  3. The cover one is the story of my life hahaha I’m sooo guilty of judging books by their covers and up until recently, if someone asked me, I would totally deny it haha
