Here we are, the age old question. 

I’m sure this is the argument that we bookworms talk about all the time. Whether it be with each other, or debating in our own minds whether we want to reread a book or not, this argument seems to go on and on and on.

But today I’m going to help with that. Because why not?

So….Rereading books – yay or nae?

Changing Views:

I feel like my mind set about this question has changed so much this year. I never used to reread books, and yet over the past few months, I’ve reread…five? I think? I’m not entirely sure, but there’s at least five since December. And I’m currently in the process of rereading the entire Harry Potter series (I’m starting Chamber of Secrets when I finish the book I’m on).

I used to think rereading books would be a waste of time, when there’s so many books I’ve not yet read. And to be honest, I do still have that mind set. Whenever I reread a book, I look guiltily over at my TBR, waiting for the day I eventually get round to them.

But for some reason, I’ve become more lenient with myself lately. I mean, most of the time I reread books because I left the series for too long and need to remember what happened before I finally continue. But still.

So what’re the arguments for both?

Yay! Let’s reread all those beautiful books!

– NOSTALGIA. We all love that feeling of returning to a well loved book.

– Need to remind yourself of what happened before continuing the series, like I do? A reread’s got you covered.

– Maybe you’re just in the mood for that particular book.

– New release for the next book. Can’t wait? Revisit the one before out of pure excitement.

Nae…Ew no I’m not rereading

– All those beautiful new shiny books that are just waiting to be devoured.

– Already read it before, what’s the point?

– Does it count? I mean, if I’ve already read it…does it count on my reading challenge since it’s already been read?

– Takes up too much time considering you’ve already read it before

Overall view?

Well, while I’m still hesitant about rereading books, and only will if I need to or really really want to…I’ve come to accept it now. Yes, it does count on my Goodreads Challenge if I delete my previous rating and set it to “currently reading” again.

Plus, I like to think of it this way – I’m going to be rereading Chamber of Secrets soon. Because I read the Harry Potter series when I was really young, those books don’t have reviews from me, just a rating. But now that I’m rereading them, they’ll get reviews. That’s got to be a bonus, right?

I do think through rereading books a lot before I decide to, purely because of the amount of other books I own that I haven’t read yet, but sometimes, you just need to revisit the books you love.

    1. That’s what I was thinking 🙂 Like it doesn’t just not class as reading a book anymore because you already read it! And I used to be the same about rereading books when I was younger too. I didn’t give a care in the world about all the others books when I was young, I just read whatever I felt like haha!

  2. When it comes to reading challenges it definitely counts! You’re reading a whole book after all.

    I don’t reread a lot. I reread Harry Potter every once in a while, and I reread the Twilight books right before a new movie came out (just the one relevant book, not the entire series) just to remind myself of the details so I could be super critical of the movies 😂 I think I also reread The Hunger Games before the movie. And I’m going to reread Vicious before the next book comes, simply because I loved that book so much. I’m reading Harry Potter again now too, I just started PoA ❤️

    1. Yeah, I tend to reread books before the movie comes out too. Like I think this year I’ll reread Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children before the movie comes out in September, because I read that book ages ago. And everyone loves rereading Harry Potter 😀

  4. I don’t reread that often, but I have a feeling that’s going to change relatively soon. Most of the time I reread because the next book in the series is coming out and I want to remind myself what happened. But lately I’ve found myself remembering reading books and loving them but not really remembering what the book is actually about and it has me wanting to reread them, so I think I might spend some time this summer (when I have more time) rereading some old favorites. 🙂

I’m a serial re-reader – but I used to be much worse before I discovered booktube and book blogging and all the shiny new books. 😛 For me, re-reads aren’t just nostalgia, they are a comfort thing – you know what’s going to happen, there are no surprises, and chances are you’re re-reading something because it’s an old favourite so you’re guaranteed to have a good time reading it.

    Re-reads can also really help you to reassess things you’ve previously not hugely likely and/or understood. Sometimes it’s just a case of needing to read a book at the right time and, who knows, maybe the right time would be on a re-read!

  6. I think rereading is a great thing to do but unfortunately something I hardly ever get around to. I like the idea that when you reread a book several times or whatever the story becomes a bit more ingrained in your mind each time. Plus I think revisiting a story that you loved has got to be something magical. I actually would really like to set aside some time to reread some of my books – there’s so much I’d like to refresh my mind of! Which is another annoying but great thing about reading, the fact that you do forgot so much about a book means you can read it again without getting bored, win!

  7. I am way yay when it comes to re -reading books. A lot of the time it’s because the sequel has been released and I can’t remember everything that happened in the first book (something I did with Red Queen and ADSoM) but there are also books I re-read because they are favourites of mine and I just genuinely love going back to them again.

    1. That’s usually the reason I reread too. I reread ADSoM at the beginning of February (I think) to refresh my mind and was so glad I did when it came to reading the second book! Need to do it more often.

        1. Definitely! I read the lunar chronicles later, so I didn’t have to wait that long for the last book, but I definitely get what you mean. Like I read The Mime Order, which was released in January 2015…and the next book isn’t out until March 2017 I think. That’s such a huge time, I know I’m definitely going to have to reread that one!

          1. Oh the wait for Winter was insane, even though Marissa Meyer released Fairest it was still unbearable. Oh god I feel like the wait for The Song Rising is going to be just as bad! I read the first two in November I think, I’ll definitely need to re-read both before the third one comes out.
            Why must it be so far away!?

  8. I do that sometimes, but it’ś very rare. Sometimes I go for audio book as a re-read since you can listen to it while doing other things and if you’ll miss something it’ś not an issue because you’ve already read it once.
    And in few cases I feel is Gould RE read a book because I simply don’t remember enough of it, for example one of the school reads – I know some of them were worth way more attention then what they got from me at school

  9. I tend to re-read a few books a year. I’d like to revisit all my past favourites to see if I still enjoy them, but that’s going to take a long time amongst all the new books I want to read! This year I’m re-reading A Series of Unfortunate Events, and I’m currently re-reading Divergent and Insurgent before reading Allegient for the first time. I’ll only re-read if it’s a book I loved first time round though.

    When I do re-read I only count it in my GoodReads challenge if I haven’t already rated it as I want to keep my original rating and read date. But I do keep my own list so I do know the actual number of books I read in the year

    1. It’s always good to reread the books you previously loved 🙂
      With the Goodreads challenge thing, I tend to just add an update on my review, and write the original date on there too as a sort of before and after.

  10. I think that rereading counts towards the reading challenge, I mean you ARE reading a book and it doesn’t matter if you read it before. 🙂
    I do reread from time to time and I really love doing it. I just love re-visiting the worlds and characters that I already love. Sometimes when I don’t feel like reading anything, I pick up a book that I have already read – that helps me sometimes. 😀 The one I reread the most is definitely the whole Harry Potter series.

    1. Usually it’s out of comfort, being able to revisit the story and not having to worry how it ends. Most people reread to remind themselves of details they forgot too, so if you reread a book years later, sometimes you could have forgotten what happens 🙂

  12. I reread Harry Potter every single year, as for other books not as much. I might reread the previous book(s) in a series before the next one comes out if I have no idea (and I mean no idea) what happened last. I like rereading, but only if it’s favourites that I have a nostalgia for. Otherwise I prefer to read new book.

  14. I love rereading books but don’t get around to doing it much besides Harry Potter. Usually when I’m trying to get out of a slump I’ll pick up one of my favourite contemporaries to help me get out though. Love this post!

      I think everyone just adores rereading Harry Potter. It seems no one has an issue with rereading that series countless times haha! But using rereading to get out of slumps is a great idea! Especially since you know you’d enjoy the book 😀

  15. I’ve reread more books this year than ever before. Partly because I want to reread books in a series before the next one comes out (Winner’s Curse trilogy, for example). I read so many books that I forgot characters and details over time.
