The Mini-Missions That Have Suddenly Taken Over My Summer TBR

So about a month ago, I wrote a blog post about my summer TBR.

I don’t usually make TBR’s because I don’t stick to them. Well surprise surprise, there’s some changes to be made to mine already.

Typical.

The other post still stands though. I’m still trying to follow the original TBR. But I’ve come up with some small “goals” to achieve, which I’m calling mini-missions, because that somehow sounds more motivating.

Probably because I want to live in a fantasy story and giving myself missions makes it sounds that little bit more epic.

So here are the mini-missions that have changed my TBR already!

Read a classic.

For goodness sake Ashleigh. Just read one. That’s all. Not so hard?

All this year, I’ve been meaning to read more classics. Has that happened yet?

Nope.

I bought Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall a while ago, and I still really want to read them both. But somehow, every single time I go to choose another book, the classics get pushed aside and I choose something else.

I think maybe it’s because I know they’ll take me much longer to read. But I need to get over that. I’m debating reading two books at the same time, so that I can choose whether to read something easy or tackle a classic. I feel like that might encourage me more. But then at the same time I know I’ll finish it quicker if I just read one book at a time like usual…ARGGHHH.

I don’t know.

Read the next Outlander book.

“I’ll read it during the summer when I have time” well guess what Ashleigh, it’s summer now. Get on it.

I’m sure everyone knows just how big the Outlander books are. It’s a little bit ridiculous.

But I adored Outlander when I read it in January. So I’m taking the same approach as I did with George RR Martin’s books – I’ll read one every few months until I’ve gotten through them all. That way, I won’t get too overwhelmed.

Well, it’s been a few months now. I’m ready. I need to take on Dragonfly in Amber. It’s staring at me from my shelf.

I need to ready my battle armour and take on those 1000+ pages one by one.

That got a bit weird.

Finish some series.

OK Ashleigh, you’re making progress with this one. But now’s the time to nail it.

Progress, progress, progress.

I’m gradually getting through the mammoth amount of series I’m in the middle of reading. But now I own a few series entirely, I can finish them off and tick a few off the list. My main aims?

– The Anna and the French Kiss series. I’m currently reading the 2nd book, so I’m nearly there.

– The Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children series. The 3rd book was finally released in paperback, so I can finally finish the series!

– The Lunar Chronicles. I’ve finished the series, but still need to read the Stars Above novellas.

Read the books that have been sat around longest.

They’re feeling neglected Ashleigh. You know you still want to read them. Now’s the time.

I’m pretty sure every bookworm has those books that have been sat around longer than the rest. I want to finally read mine.

Main goals…

– All the light we cannot see

– Neverfade

– The next together

So there we have it!

Those are a few mini-missions I hope to achieve through my summer reading!

Disclaimer: I’m suffering from a migraine for the 2nd day in a row and so I’m not in the best of moods, so I’m really sorry if this post hasn’t been up to it’s usual standard of enthusiasm! I tried!

  2. Have you thought about trying modern classics? They’re still classics, obviously, but tend to be shorter and – I’ve found – aren’t as taxing and time consuming. I’d recommend We Have Always Lived in the Castle and A Streetcar Named Desire.

    My nan has just read all of the Outlander books back to back and I have NO idea how she did it. But then, I did the same with George R.R. Martin’s stuff. Good luck with it!

    I still need to finish Miss Peregrine’s too, and I desperately need to get my hands on Stars Above because the Lunar Chronicles is one of my favourite series. Ever.

    My goals for summer are rather similar to yours: finish some series and read those books I’ve had for years! I just can’t seem to stop buying new books though. 😦

    1. I never knew which books classed as “modern classics”, but now that I know where to start I might have to check them out. I’ve heard of both the ones you’ve mentioned, so that’s encouraging haha! 😀

    1. Thank you! I feel like I’ll enjoy both, it’s just getting myself to actually read them I seem to be struggling with. Knowing you recommend them though is pushing me to do so! 😀

  6. Sorry to hear about your migraines! I hope you are feeling better. 🙂 These mini missions seem like a good idea. I’m horrific at staying with my TBRs, so maybe I’ll give myself some mini missions as well. Great idea!

    1. Thank you! I’m feeling much better now, thanks 🙂 And I love making mini-missions! They’re a great way of motivating me to be a bit more diverse with my reading, instead of just picking the same genre all the time 😀

  7. I usually have to be in a specific mood if I want to take on a classic. Just take the first step and read a few chapters – if you find yourself getting into the story, then that’s wonderful, but if not, then maybe you could move on to the next item on your TBR. Don’t pressure yourself into reading these books because that might make you like them less. 🙂 oh, and Stars Above is absolutely fantastic ❤

I’ve actually picked up Wuthering Heights as a sort of “second” book, so I’ll be reading a YA most days, but then every night (or jut when I fancy something different) I pick up Wuthering Heights instead and read a couple of chapters. It’s slow going, but I’m enjoying it, and there’s definitely no pressure! And I can’t wait to read Stars Above – I’ve miraculously avoided spoilers of who the whole “wedding” thing involves. I’m sure that was mentioned somewhere. I’ll find out soon enough!

      1. That’s great! Wuthering Heights is on my TBR, too, but I feel like I’m not yet in the right mood for it. 🙂 yay, me too! I love lunartics precisely because of that – they don’t give away spoilers in posts and are really considerate with people who haven’t read all the books in the series ❤

  8. I take the same approach with mammoth books! I’ve basically read one ASOIAF book a year for the last 4 years. Haha. I’m reading the 5th one now. I haven’t picked up the second Outlander book yet. But it hasn’t been that long since I read the first one, so I may need a little more time. I’m nervous about where that series is going!
