Let’s Talk:Cursed Child hopes, Fantastic Beasts movie and general wizarding wonders!

harry potter

This week’s discussion is taking on a particular theme…

Harry Potter!!!

Since we’re only a mere few days away from the release of the Cursed Child book (EEEEKKKKKK!) I thought it’d only be fitting for this week’s chat to be about all things Harry Potter.

I didn’t quite know WHAT to write about, since there’s so much of the wizarding world to explore, so I did a poll on twitter…

harry potter topics

…and it basically showed that we can’t miss ANYTHING here today. So this will be a good old ramble about everything Harry Potter related.

Be prepared.

I’ll warn you now: If you HAVEN’T read all the Harry Potter books, leave now. This will likely contain spoilers, and you probably won’t have a clue what’s going on with magic spells and wand properties etc etc.

And now…

This is probably my longest discussion yet, so get comfy and let’s talk, Potterheads!

personal profile

Now, I wanted to talk about the original series a little bit first, but with there being SO MUCH to talk about, what to do?

I’ve made a little personal profile, listing all the key facts about myself regarding the wizarding world. And I want you to fill this in too in the comments! I’d love to see them all!

break

Age I read the series: 7-10 (I think. And yes, it took me a very long while)

Hogwarts House: Slytherin – by the old Pottermore. The updated Pottermore says I’m a Gryffindor and has given me a serious (Sirius) identity crisis. I still say I’m Slytherin, because I have been for years. Maybe I’ve gotten braver over the years? Or do I say I’m a Slytherdor?

Ilvermorny House: Thunderbird (and I now want sorting quizzes for all the wizarding schools, thanks)

Wand (if you know through Pottermore): Cedar wood with a Phoenix feather core 12 ¾” and Surprisingly Swishy flexibility

Favourite book: Deathly Hallows – I have a thing for small details and backstories and complex plots coming together, and that book is FULL of them.

Favourite movie: Philosopher’s Stone – purely for nostalgia. It gives me such a wonderful feeling inside and reminds me of Christmas because I always seem to watch it around then.

Favourite Character: Hermione Granger.

Why? She was the first person I idolized, despite being fictional. When I was younger I loved doing homework and encouraged myself to read so I’d be more like her.

Another character you’re particularly fond of? Luna Lovegood! I just adore how whimsical she is ❤

Fill this ^ in down below in the comments!

why so great

To put it simply, JK Rowling has literally taken over the world with it. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of another book or film series that has wormed it’s way into every country, and has had such a devoted fanbase for so many years. Most popular things die down after a while – Harry Potter just keeps giving.

But why do we love it so much?

Well, the only reason I can give – and actually explain without talking for years – is because it makes so much sense.

JK Rowling thought everything through. How the wizarding world fits in with the muggle world. How magic can affect different things – objects, electricity, people. There’s an endless list of magical places, objects, animals, spells, potions, EVERYTHING. It’s so believable. I mean, if Hagrid knocked down my door right now and told me it’s all real, I’d be like Harry and just accept it within three minutes like “yeah sure let’s go explore” and start running into brick walls hoping to find the Hogwarts train on the other side (though my acceptance would be out of sheer hope).

Of course, there’s other reasons why it’s so great. The ridiculously complex story that never fails to give out small details for us Potterheads to really cherish. The complicated characters and accurate sense of growing up. And let’s not forget – sassy Harry.

But to talk about it all would leave us talking about it for years. Which, to be fair, we ARE already doing because THIS FANDOM HAS NOT DIED. GO US!

announcement

Ahhhh, the day Cursed Child was announced. I actually had VERY mixed feelings about it.

First of all, I went into fangirl mode because WE’RE FINALLY GETTING MORE OF THE WIZARDING WORLD!!!

And then I realized the play was only being shown in London. And was really quite expensive. And even though I do live in England, a lot closer than most fans are…to travel there, get the tickets and book a hotel for however many nights would still cost hundreds. Because come on, it’s London.

So at first, I was happy but also jealous of the people who could go. If there was more to the wizarding world, I needed to know, and the idea of not knowing an entire story when others do…well, it didn’t settle well with me to say the least.

And then.

OOOOOHHHHH AND THEN.

THERE WAS ANOTHER ANNOUNCEMENT.

The book. The play. The Screenplay.

Whatever you want to call it, the screenplay/script of the play is being published, so we WILL be able to know the story!

AND THAT’S WHEN MY FULL FANGIRL FORM BURST FROM ITS INNER DEPTHS AND FLOURISHED ONCE AGAIN IN THE SPECTACULAR WONDER THAT IS THE WIZARDING WORLD.

hopes for cursed child

To be honest, I don’t have that many hopes. Just having more information on the wizarding world fills everything I hoped for in the last few years.

But obviously, there’s a few things…

I hope there’s a more diverse Hogwarts houses for the next generation. I’m pretty sure a certain someone is going to end up in Slytherin, but I want there to be more Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs too!

I hope to see at least a bit about each of the next generation. Not just the main lot, but Victoire and Louis (Bill & Fleur’s), Teddy (Tonks & Lupin’s), Fred II and Roxanne (George & Angelina’s), Lorcan and Lysander (Luna & Rolf’s) AND SO ON. There’s too many to list, wow.

I hope to see at least a tiny hint of Luna Lovegood. For some reason it doesn’t feel likely, even though one of Harry’s kids has a middle name after her, but still. I just hope to hear something about how she’s doing. If she’s still as random as ever.

I hope that the personalities of the new characters will be just a thorough as it would be in a normal novel, rather than a play. I’ve not read many plays, so I’m not a good judge. But if it’s what the actors judge their performance on, it’s got to be good, right?

fantastic beasts

Now, we can’t forget about this other chunk of the wizarding world now, can we? Because the Wizarding world is actually the WORLD now, with new schools introduced all over the globe and Fantastic Beasts being set in America.

And there’s been a new trailer release at San Diego Comic Con!

It looks incredible(if you haven’t seen it, click here) and I honestly cannot wait for this film to hit the big screen. I’m so intrigued to how they’ve turned that tiny wizarding textbook into an epic adventure through the wizarding world. Plus the magical creatures are one of my favourite things about Harry Potter, so having a film based on them feels like a blessing!

To quote the man at the end of the new trailer…“I wanna be a wizarrdddd” 😆

Now I’ve rambled on enough, it’s your turn!

What’s your personal profile? (the facts from the first section!)

Why would you say Harry Potter is so great?

What was your reaction to the Cursed Child news?

Will you be watching the play, or just getting the book like me?

What do you hope to see in Cursed Child?

And what do you think of the new Fantastic Beasts trailer?

Also – feel free to talk about anything else Harry Potter related in the comments too! I just didn’t want this post to end up being miles long! I’ll happily chat about Harry Potter all day though so fire away 😀

  1. YAAAAS ! The long awaited post is here !! Here I go :
Age I read the series: 7-9
Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw FOREVAAAAH !! I’ve always identified as one and when the first sorting affirmed that I cried victory hahaha and the second one did the same this year.
Ilvermorny House: Pukwudgie, though I am not convinced by this one.
Wand: Beech wood with a Dragon heartstring core 13″ and Unbending flexibility. I’ve always had a thing for dragons, now I know hahaha
    Favourite book: Goblet of Fire
Favourite movie: Mmm I seriously don’t know about this one. Maybe Order of the Phoenix ?? I don’t knooooow
    Favourite Character: Luna Lovegood
Why? Because she’s so unique and confident about it. She doesn’t care what others might think of who she is.
Another character you’re particularly fond of? Hermione. This is a close one actually !!! I feel like Hermione is an amazing role model to younger girls reading harry potter.

Okay so when I heard about the play to be honest I was furious because it was in London. WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF US ???? But then when the screenplay was announced I might have jumped and danced around a bit. Maybe. There is no way to verify that statement.

And I am also very excited about the Fantastical Beasts movie ! The trailers made me so eager to watch it 😀

    1. YESS thank you so much for commenting Fadwa!
My favourite characters were really close between Luna and Hermione too – but I’d feel like a traitor to my younger self if I didn’t say Hermione 😆 I had the exact same reaction to the Cursed Child announcement, thank god the screenplay was announced soon after! I’m pretty sure I’d have rioted if I knew we’d miss a part of the story!

        1. They’re both such amazing characters though, either one of them is an easy choice! I adore Hermione’s determination and…well, basically everything. The there’s Luna and all her whimsical optimism and her having no fear of being unique…and again, basically everything 😆 I just adore them both ❤

  2. I read Harry Potter between the ages of 5-8 ish, and according to Pottermore I am a Gryffindor and a Thunderbird like you! But I am also a bit confused, because my old Pottermore said I was a Ravenclaw… Anyway, my favorite book has always been Prisoner of Azkaban and the Deathly Hallows movies are my favorites. My favorite character as a kid was Hermione because I am a bookish, clever nerd so I found her easy to relate to. But I also really liked Ginny! I am super excited for Fantastic Beasts, especially because I will actually be able to see that one, unlike the play… I loved this post. It makes me want to read Harry Potter again!

    1. Yayy for Thunderbirds! 😀 I think I latched onto Hermione for the same reason too. I loved Ginny in the books but not so much the films…yeah.
I feel the same about Fantastic Beasts! I’m so so incredibly happy it’s a film rather than a play or something, it’ll be incredible! And same, the urge to reread Harry Potter comes to me so often! ❤

  3. I LOVE THIS POST. I can’t believe we’re only a couple of days before the Cursed Child releases. I don’t even know what to expect, just that since JKR is behind the story (not the writing, I know), I’m sure I’ll be pleased. Plus, the play has been getting RAVE reviews. I’m so excited. As for the little form:

Age I read the series: I was 9 when I read books 1-4, then read the others as they released. :3

Hogwarts House: Slytherin. I used to be a Ravenclaw but I remember taking a detailed quiz that said I was 48% Slytherin, 52% Ravenclaw. But over the past couple of years, I’ve always gotten Slytherin.

    Ilvermorny House: Thunderbird 😀

Wand (if you know through Pottermore): Black Walnut wood with a Dragon heartstring core 13″ and Unyielding flexibility

    Favourite book: Deathly Hallows!

Favourite movie: Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2, followed closely by Prisoner of Azkaban.

    Favourite Character: Draco Malfoy!

Why? Because he’s one of the most complex people in the series. I don’t have a crush on him, nor do I think he’s a good person per se, but just his complexity and inner turmoil draws me to him. It wasn’t his fault- had he grown up in a better family, he would’ve been a good boy instead of a broken one. 😦

Another character you’re particularly fond of? Fred & George. I’m not crying, I promise. 😦

  4. YESS THANK YOU! I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😀
I’m so intrigued as to what the whole “cursed child” thing is about. Should be interesting!
YAY for Slytherin Thunderbirds! Slytherbirds? Thunderins? Well THEY sound interesting combined ahaha 😆
Very true about Draco. He just did whatever he thought would make his family proud, considering how they messed everything up for him by allying with the dark side. And ohhhh Fred and George 😦 They’re the saddest thing about the ending of the series, my heart just…ughh. I can’t.

  5. Age I read the series: 7-9 My mum bought me my first book and I fell in love! ❤
Hogwarts House: Slytherin according to the new Pottermore. I've always thought of myself as one. Their determination and persistence inspires me tbh 😀 not to mention that they don't take shit from anyone and I like that
Ilvermorny House: Pukwudgie … I'm still confused as to how I'm both a Slytherin AND a Pukwudgie since Pukwudgies are healers and they represent the heart.. still trying to come in terms with it.
Wand (if you know through Pottermore): I don't know… might check after posting that comment 😀
Favourite book: I haven't really thought about it but probably Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone because this is where everything begins and if it weren't for the intriguing book I wouldn't have made it to the very end :')
Favourite movie: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban because it's the only movie where Voldemort isn't in and it's just about Harry finding out more about his father and the Marauders. The hope that he had that maybe he would have a normal life with SIrius and a house and everything made me fall in love with it.
    Favourite Character: Hermione Granger
Why: I've always loved how strong and badass she was and how she always cared about her education, how loyal she was to her friends and how undoubtedly she was the best witch in her age. I fell in love with her even more as I grew up and saw how unfair women are being treated in real life and how much work they had to do to even be considered as half good as men are. I love how she didn't follow Ron when he left them when they were looking for horcruxes and how she stuck with Harry. I love how she didn't care that she was a muggleborn and thrived in Hogwarts,I love how she shatters every stereotype out there and I'm just in love with everything about her tbh… I could go on for days.
Another character you’re particularly fond of? Definitely Luna. I loved how she didn't care what others thought of her, how she embraced her uniqueness and personality and I loved how proud she was of her friends and how she respected everyone and by everyone I mean EVEN DOBBY, a creature that would be treated very badly by everyone else. She had such a pure soul bless her and you're right… I really hope to hear more about her at Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Great blog btw..I've only been here for a couple of weeks and I'm in love with it..keep up the good work! :3 ❤

    1. Thank you so so much!
Also, we have so much in common when it comes to Harry Potter haha 😆 I’m definitely a Slytherin too for the determination…plus I can be sneaky and always find a way to get my plans to work when I want them to, apparently. Not to mention the “don’t take shit from no one” attitude 😆 oh I love it ❤
And YESSS I agree with everything you said about Hermione and Luna! If anyone ever said I was anything like either of them, I'd be so overwhelmingly happy because that'd be such a huge compliment to me. They're such incredible characters!
