August Wrap Up – The result of a month doing absolutely nothing

Okayy, this month did actually speed by for once. That’s not happened for a while. But this time it feels like I literally only just wrote my July Wrap Up…so strange.

I had a bit of a weird reading month. I felt like I didn’t read anything? But I very obviously did. I don’t know what August did to me.

I read 8 books this month, which seems to be my average per month this summer. Which I’m thrilled about, because like I always say, I usually only read one book a week. I’m dreading how slow my reading pace will be once I’m back at college in September *cries*

Like I said in the intro, for some strange reason I feel like I’ve read about two books this month. Then I look back at this and think “wait what?” And it’s been a pretty mixed month. I feel like all of the books I’ve read, I’ve either really enjoyed or really…not. Ugh. You’ll see what I mean.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne & John Tiffany

Rated 5/5 stars – [Review]

All those negative reviews of people saying they were disappointed? I’m not one of those people. Sure, it was a bit strange and there was a certain *plot point* that seemed a bit fanfiction-y to me, but still. I loved it. I adored it.

(Though I have to admit, Albus was such a lit brat. I wanted to push him into the lake to swim with the giant squid. Ugh)

What’s A Girl Gotta Do?

by Holly Bourne

 Rated 4.5/5 stars – [Review]

While this book made me feel like sludge, it was for the best reason possible. I love the three main girls in this book, and seeing them go through so much together…ahh I felt like I went through it all with them.

There were a few questions left unanswered, so I’m really glad we have a novella to look forward to!

The Tormented Witch

by J.C. Beckham

Rated 2/5 stars – [Review]

While this book was a relatively quick and fun read, it as just too cringey for me. I think I’d have enjoyed it when I was younger and going through my Twilight phase, but now…I just couldn’t handle it.

Plus I didn’t really like the main character, so that didn’t go down well.

Saga Volume 2

by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples

Rated 3/5 stars – [Review]

I finally got round to reading Volume 2 of this graphic novel series! I loved the art, just as much as I did with the first. Again, the story was intriguing. But not much seemed to happen? I know it’s short but still. There seemed to be unnecessary sexual content too, and while I don’t mind it at all, like I said – it was unnecessary.

The Beautifull Cassandra

I love the Penguin Little Black Classics, and with me joining the Austentatious book club, I decided to pick up Jane Austen’s teenage writings. I found this highly amusing – more so than I expected – and I can already imagine myself reading this again and again in the future. Hell, I’ve already reread some passages 😀

The Evolution of Mara Dyer

So with me buying the final book in this series this month (as you’ll see in my book haul next week), I decided it was time I read the 2nd. And I really enjoyed it! It DID start getting a bit repetitive, but the addictiveness stayed put. And the last 100 pages or so were SO intense! I could barely form my reaction on snapchat after 😆

The Future of the Past

So this one was a bit disappointing for me. I loved the idea behind the plot, but the overall storytelling wasn’t all that great. I didn’t feel any emotion towards it, and it took me a lot longer to read than a 200 page book should. That paired with the sheer amount of mistakes in the book…well, the lower rating says it all really.

Bridget Jones’s Diary

So. I’m just going to say it now. I did not like this book at all. Which is a shame, because I’ve seen the film countless times and while the film isn’t exactly good either, it’s a sort of guilty pleasure of mine.

My review will be up soon (either Monday or Tuesday) so all will be explained then.

My boyfriend gave me this book after he read it, and it sounds really interesting. It’s a series of short stories, all written by H.P. Lovecraft. I’ve not read anything by him before, but I’ve been getting into classics more lately so I thought this would be nice to read every so often.

I’ll definitely be taking my time with this one, just reading one short story every so often. To be honest, this will probably be on my “Currently Reading” list for a veeeeerrrryyyyyy long time. It’s quite a lengthy little book, but I can’t wait to trudge my way through it bit by bit.

As part of the Austentatious book club, I’ll also be starting Persuasion by Jane Austen at the start of September.

Another classic that I’ll be taking my time reading. It feels weird to have so many books on my currently reading shelf at the same time, when usually I only read one at a time, but I’ve decided the best way I read classics is to read them along with my “usual books”, and much slower. Just a few chapters a night.

And what is my “usual book”, you might ask? Well, I’m fairly sure that today I’m going to FINALLY start reading Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. Oh how long this wonderful looking treasure has been sat on my shelves. I’ve no idea why I haven’t read it already. But I’m just coming out of a reading slump, and want something good to pull me back in. On twitter I made a poll asking you guys which book I should start today out of Six of Crows, Stars Above, The Lie Tree and Daughter of Smoke and Bone. As I’m writing this, Six Of Crows is really far out in the lead, so I’m pretty sure the answer will be this!

This bit is going to be quite short because I spent August literally doing nothing. And I’ve loved it.

The only relatively productive thing that happened was redecorating the living room. It looks much better now.

And the only exciting thing I have to mention is how close my blog is to 500 followers! As I’m writing this I’m just 7 away, and I think it’d be incredible to reach 500 before my 1 year blogiversary next month! *fingers crossed*

I have a /sort of/ idea for how I’ll celebrate 500 followers/1 year blogiversary. I’m thinking of doing a bookshelf tour. The key word here being “thinking”, because I’d need to see if I can make the actual video, edit it to look somewhat good, try to make it so it isn’t half an hour-long and upload it to YouTube to THEN be linked here. Phew. Plus I don’t know how many of you guys would actually be interested in a bookshelf tour. I DID do a twitter poll for that too and the majority said they wanted it so…who knows.
