The Top 10 books I absolutely NEED to read before the end of 2016 comes around

title.PNG

All year, I’ve had a list of books that I ABSOLUTELY NEED TO GET TO. You know the sorts. The ones with loads of hype AND actually sound amazing. The ones that have been sat on your shelves waiting for months. The ones that have been on every TBR possible and yet still haven’t been read.

WELL HERE’S ANOTHER TBR FOR THEM.

Because surely my knack for failing TBRs will leave me this time and actually let me read all the books listed…right?

Now, this list is just from the books I own. Not the books I intend to buy. If they were on the list too, you’d be reading this list until George RR Martin decides to publish his next book (come on MR Martin – we’re waiting!!).

So here are the top 10 books I absolutely need to read before the end of 2016!

So here’s one I got when I went through a bit of a historical fiction craze at the beginning of the year. But then the craze ended (though it’s still one of my favourite genres) and I just haven’t gotten round to it yet.

NO. THIS BOOK DOESN’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. DAMN THAT BOOK FOR RUINING THE COLOUR GREY.

Sorry. Just had to get that out there. The amount of times I’ve been asked whether it’s related to that book or not is slightly ridiculous 😆

But here’s another one I got when going through the historical fiction craze. Still don’t know why I haven’t read this one, because it’s a lot shorter than the rest of the books on this list…

This is an ARC that was sent to me by Hodder & Stoughton (the publishers) that doesn’t come out aaaallllll the way until January. So technically, I have plenty of time to read this. Months, in fact. But this stunning book and the general magical sound of it is just tempting me ever closer and I NEED IT.

Zeesh. This is one of the bad ones. This book has been on my TBR for years – and I mean years – and I finally got it for Christmas last year. And…still haven’t read it.

I know. I’m awful. BUT ONE DAY.

I’d been waiting over a year for this to come out in paperback, I think. It was a long time, at least. So when that finally happened in June, I got the book. And yet here we are.

I’m going to need to find a really good summary of Hollow City because WOW I read that a while ago now. Might need a reminder of what happened…

I’ve been wanting to read this since…well, before it came out. I remember how HUGE the hype was. I remember how everyone loved it. And then gradually…the mixed reviews started coming through. And now I quite hesitant to pick it up (especially when compared to the rest on this list). But I need to at some point because I’m intrigued to see what I think.

Though I think I saw a major spoiler for it, so there’s that. *seethes*

I feel like this should be more of a priority. I’ve been going off a lot of the series I’ve started lately, and I somehow feel like this will be next if I don’t get to this book quick enough. But it’s so HUGE. I just don’t know when I’ll have time to read it.

Plus, I’m not going to lie – I need motivation for this one. A lot of it.

Another one I waited over a year for. For the paperback version, at least. I loved the first book, but again I’ll have to find a good summary of it because I read it ages ago. It’s about time this one happened.

One of my friends made me buy this. Well, she didn’t make me. But she recommend it highly and she never recommends me books so I felt obliged to buy it. Plus it DOES sound interesting. I’m thinking I might read it in October for the darker-halloween-ish times. It sounds like a dark atmosphere story.

Hype. That’s what made me buy this book. And it’s fantasy. Any fantasy book – I’ll give it a go. Still haven’t read it though (obviously, otherwise it wouldn’t be on the list). Soon though. I hope.

So there we have it!

Those are the books that I own that are high on my priority list right now.

Feel free to shout at me in the comments telling me I NEED TO READ THESE BOOKS. Maybe it’ll motivate me some more.

Have you read any of these? Which ones and thoughts?

Any of your favourite here?

Do you have any books you really want to read before the end of 2016? Which ones?

Let me know in the comments!

Until next time…

  2. All The Light We Cannot See is on my TBR as well, although I don’t own it yet. I’ve read Shades of Gray earlier this year though and it was a great read! It’s also really quick, so give it a go 🙂 Happy reading!

  3. How awesome that you have publishers sending you books! Wow!
I don’t like the cover of that version of Daughter of Smoke & Bone. I like the crazy masked ones.
Caravel? LUCKY! You have such good books to choose from!

    1. I know, I feel SO lucky! Especially with Caraval – I didn’t even request it, it just turned up on my doorstep totally by surprise from the publishers along with another ARC (Frostblood, don’t know if you’ve heard of it?). So incredibly grateful to them ❤

I prefer the masked covers for DOSAB too, though I don't mind these ones. I used to hate them but the colours have won me over slightly.

    1. I don’t expect anything less than heartbreaking from a historical fiction book! They all break my heart ❤ And so many people LOVE Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and I'm pretty sure I will too so I NEED to read it!

  4. I really want to read Uprooted, Red Queen and Caraval too! (Although I don’t have an advanced copy of the latter, sadly.) I’ve actually just got Daughter of Smoke and Bone out of the library, so depending on when you were thinking of reading it, we could totally do a buddy read? 🙂

    1. I’m surprised I have the ARC myself to be honest!
And I’d love to buddy read it, though I don’t know if I’ll be able too because I need to read a bunch of other books first that were sent to me for review :/ There’s 2 or 3 of them and I’ll be starting college again soon so I’ve no idea how long it’ll take me.

  5. I *adore* All the Light We Cannot See– it’s beautiful!
Personally, I also have Uprooted on my list, as well as Waking Up by Sam Harris. I am not really one to read books about religion, but it’s on my challenge list… I’m sure you know how that goes!

    1. I really should get to it soon, I’ve owned it for so long now and with all the mixed reviews, I’m intrigued to see what I think. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it (though it’s a shame Glass Sword disappointed you) 🙂 Usually I’m not actually bothered by spoilers, but when it’s a major spoiler for a book I (at the time) had little motivation to read…it didn’t help.

  6. I’ve got a few of those books yet to read, too, including The Lie Tree and All The Light We Cannot See. I really need to get round to them sometime soon, they’ve been on my bookshelf for so long!!

I tried reading Red Queen last year, but (and I don’t want to put you off here, aha!) I couldn’t read more than 3 or 4 chapters! I just found it borrowed heavily from other books. But I hope you enjoy it, it might be more your thing than it was mine! 🙂

    1. They sound so good, don’t they? It’s a shame we don’t have more time to burrow into all the books 😆

My only motivation for reading Red Queen right now is to see what my opinion of it is compared to all the mixed reviews, so you’ve not put me off!

  7. These are some great books to try and get around to before the end of the year Ashleigh. I’ve read and loved All the Light We Cannot See, Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Library of Souls so I hope you enjoy them as well. I’ll be keeping an eye out for your reviews of all three as well.
I have Uprooted on my to-read list as well, where it’s been for ages! My friend brought me a copy for my birthday back in June so I’ve really got no excuse not to get started on it at some point soon. I’ve heard loads of great things about this book so I’m excited to get around to it!
Also I am so jealous you managed to get an ARC of Caraval, I cannot wait to get my hands on that book when it’s released. It’s one of my most anticipated reads for next year and I cannot wait for it to be released, I really hope you enjoy it! 😀

    1. I’m so glad you loved those three – I’m fairly sure I will too!
Uprooted just sounds so intriguing doesn’t it? We really should crack on with reading that ahaha 😆
And Caraval sounds amazing! I’m SO grateful to have received an ARC. I also can’t wait to get other people excited for it when my review goes up for it (eventually – you know, once I’ve read it and it’s closer to release day!)

      1. They’re amazing books, I know I’m not the only one who loved them so it’s not just me saying that! 🙂
Exactly, I don’t know what’s stopping us from reading it, it’s not like I’ve seen many negative reviews that could be putting me off.
It must have been amazing to receive that ARC, and yeah given it’s got quite a while before its release you’ve got plenty of time to write an amazing review that will make everyone want to run out and buy it! 😀

  8. I want to read so many of those books too! They are just sitting on my shelf and I have no idea when I am going to get to them. I hope you enjoy All The Light We Cannot See as much as I did, when you get around to reading it 🙂 (Your photography skills are <3)

    1. Thank you SO much!
It’s so much easier to collect books quicker than we can read them ahaha 😆 And I’m pretty sure I’ll adore All The Light We Cannot See, it’s seems exactly the sort of thing that I love!

    1. Yay I’m glad to hear it! I’m sure I’ll love them both 🙂 I bet you’re excited for The Fate of the Tearling coming out soon(ish) ? I hardly hear anyone talk about this series! It needs more recognition!

  9. The Lie Tree is one the most surprising books I read this year. I wasn’t really sure what to expect with it, because the blurb sounded so strange. However, this book was fantastic. Dark, mature, and just great. I really hope you enjoy it!

    1. Thank you!
One of my friends recommended it to me and she doesn’t do that often so I thought it must be good ahaha 😆 I’m looking forward to trying it, I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it!

  10. The Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Red Queen have been on my shelf for so long. I pick them up and bring them closer all the time with the intentions to read them and never do! I’m so glad i’m not the only one who hasn’t got round to them yet XD
