So with 2017 just started, I decided I’d take part in the 2016 Annual End of Year Book Survey – Originally made by The Perpetual Page-Turner (all the graphics are made by her too).

This is basically a look back of all the books I read throughout the year, though not necessarily published this year, filling in all the categories 🙂 A quick, easy post, but an interesting one nonetheless!

So without anymore rambling, let’s get into the survey!

1. Best Book You Read In 2016?

I just have to be really basic here and say A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas. So many people love it, and I’m definitely one of them, despite it’s problems.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

I’ll go with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child screenplay. Technically, I did really enjoy it. When I first reviewed it, I gave it 5/5 stars. But it didn’t take me long to dock that rating right down to 3 stars. Because let’s be real, that play is just weird. It doesn’t entirely make sense, the original characters feel different,  and all in all it was just wasn’t worth the hype it had. Though I did like making a day of the release.

 3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?  

I’ll say Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. I really didn’t expect to like it, since I’m not a huge fan of contemporary, but all the way through I loved the main character Lou Clarke and all her quirks. Plus I got way too caught up in the story, the emotions hit me so hard. It’s just a shame the second book ruined it for me

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas!

 5. Best series you started in 2016? Best Sequel of 2016? Best Series Ender of 2016?

Best series started – The Spinster Club series by Holly Bourne (I actually finished the entire series)

Best Sequel – A Court of Mist and Fury

Best Series Ender – Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins

 6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2016?

Aside from Holly Bourne, who’s spinster club series I had no problem speeding my way through, I’m going to say Laini Taylor. I’ve only read Daughter of Smoke and Bone but I loved it!

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

The Creeper Man by Dawn Kurtagich. As a horror, it’s definitely from a genre I don’t usually read. But it’s one of my favourite books 🙂

 8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas. Yes, there’s a lot of Maas in here, but her books are the sort I wait for all year and then read all 600 pages of in a couple of days.

 9. Book You Read In 2016 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

I don’t tend to reread books often (this year was a strange anomaly for that) so I actually have no idea.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2016?

Ooooh there’s a few for this – either Stars Above by Marissa Meyer, or the Clothbound Jane Austen books I got this year.

11. Most memorable character of 2016?

Rhysand from the Night Court ❤

 12. Most beautifully written book read in 2016?

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2016?

Possibly The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. Though not particularly life changing for me, it left me thinking for days after and has opened my reading genre to welcome nonfiction. I never read nonfiction, so that’s a huge change.

 14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2016 to finally read? 

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo! I read it towards the end of 2016 and adored it so much (like the rest of the world).

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2016?

How I did this: Went to my read books on Goodreads and sorted by page number and just looked for what I knew I read this year that was the shortest and longest.

Shortest: On The Merits Of Unnaturalness by Samantha Shannon (writing as Jaxon Hall)

Longest: Dragonfly In Amber by Diana Gabaldon

 17. Book That Shocked You The Most

(Because of a plot twist, character death, left you hanging with your mouth wide open, etc.)

Even though it’s not out yet, I read an ARC of Caraval not long ago and only holy hell that book is twisted. I had no idea what was going on half the time so that HAS to be my most shocking read.

The trio of friends – Evie, Amber and Lottie – from the Spinster Club trilogy.

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2016 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen – I read Pride and Prejudice the year before and both are now my favourite classics.

21. Best Book You Read In 2016 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure:

Six of Crows. SO MANY TIMES I WAS TOLD TO READ IT.

23. Best 2016 debut you read?

The Creeper Man by Dawn Kurtagich.

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?

Paper Boats by Erndell Scott – set in World War 2 and zeesh was it grim. Amazing though.

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?

The Spinster Club trilogy, of course.

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2016?

Quite a lot, I cry all the time….

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year?

The one I mentioned above – Paper Boats by Erndell Scott. It’s one of my favourite historical fiction books ever, and yet no one has heard of it.

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul?

After You by Jojo Moyes because IT RUINED THE SERIES FOR ME HOW DARE IT.

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2016?

Either…

Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin – about a universe where Hitler won the war and a motorcycle race where the winner gets to meet him. Also shapeshifters.

OR

A Gathering of Shadows – Cross dressing pirates, masquerade balls, magic competitions, parallel Londons, and living magic.

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

Again, After You by Jojo Moyes because I hated it and it ruined one of my favourites books for me.

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2016?

I seriously have no idea, I went through and reorganised them at the beginning of the year but since then I’ve lost track of them all again. I just go through my reader every so often and visit as many as possible 🙂

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2016?

Again, I honestly have no idea. I’ve been writing that many lately with how much I read over Christmas Break, I’ve completely forgotten all the other I wrote before 😆

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?

Personally, I LOVED the one I made a couple of weeks ago asking you guys to recommend me books from genres I don’t usually read, so that I can complete my reading resolutions for 2017. I had such a great response from it 😀

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

I don’t go to any bookish events, though I do take part in #UKYACHAT over on twitter every Friday (when it’s on) and I love that!

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2016?

This year? Probably having enough courage to start up my booktube channel! I’ve wanted to for years and finally have done 😀

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?

Learning how to make the design parts actually look somewhat decent and also teaching myself how to edit videos for YouTube.

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?

I have no idea how you actually check this, but I know you guys like my discussion posts!

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?

Any of my reviews to be honest, they’re not exactly the most popular posts on book blogs am I right?

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?

I really don’t know…Maybe that Book Depository has worldwide free shipping? Though I haven’t actually used it yet, it’s nice to know.

10.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

Yes! I completed my Goodreads reading challenge and also all my reading resolutions apart from one! I have an entire post about it here.

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2016 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2017?

There’s quite a few, but the first that spring to mind are Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard or Uprooted by Niomi Novik.

A Court of Wings and Ruin or the 6th Throne of Glass books by Sarah J Maas

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

 4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2017?

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2017?

Just keeping everything up really. I’ll be going to uni towards the end of 2017 so it might be harder to keep up with things.
