It’s a good job I pushed myself to read this final book in the trilogy in December. I can tell I was going off the series. But more about that in a moment…

This was a really good ending to the series.
Simple enough way to put it, right?
No, but really. The second book ends with a cliffhanger, and I was eager to get into this one just to see what happened. And the remedy/explanation for that cliffhanger really developed the story in a way that was fascinating to me. It added another element to the story, something else to learn and worry about. Not only that, but it helped the development of the main character, Jacob, since we get to see how he handles the situation.
Much like the second book, not only is the plot full of drama and dangers, but the actual setting of the book is full of dangers, making it infinitely more interesting. We explored a new place with not only the imminent dangers of the “bad guys”, but also the actual surroundings. You never knew when something was going to spring up and mess up the progress of the main characters.
What I can’t help feeling with this series is that it’s really lighthearted. It honestly confuses me SO much when people class this as a horror, because to me there isn’t anything remotely horror-like. Sure, it looks dark and a bit grim, the photos are odd and it would certainly be a horrific if I had to actually live the story, but reading it...nahhh. There’s no way this is a serious story, with all the handy conveniences and lucky guesses.
Honestly, I’ve grown away from this series. How can you tell? Well, I personally think the series gets better with each book…and yet my ratings get lower with each book. I’ve just found myself thinking they’re a fun read, though nothing that particularly stick with me or makes me really excited.
But still, it was entertaining. And I appreciated how the parents didn’t just completely vanish from the story during all this adventuring. That happens way too often in YA novels. So I’m glad I stuck by it and finally finished the series. Even if it did take me a fair few years and a reread of the first two books. Maybe if I’d have read the entire series when I tried the first time round, I’d have rated it higher.
