An Update: The way reviews are done around these parts

review update

So. Another update.

As you might have seen in my most recent Sunday Status post, I’ve been gradually converting this blog into something more relaxed, more personal. As I said there, I’m not going to post if I don’t have anything worth writing about – I’m not going to keep myself on a schedule. Especially with the looming event of university starting.

Well, another small change I actually hadn’t thought about but has made itself vividly clear to my mind…I won’t be reviewing every book I read anymore.

Of course, I’ll still review books. That is the primary purpose of this blog, after all.

But lately, I’ve found myself wanting to have a more relaxed blog upload schedule, and I can’t really do that when I’m already behind on reviews. To catch up, I would need to post two reviews a week for a month or two, and quite frankly I don’t want my blog to be entirely swamped with reviews. I know I don’t like blogs that are plastered with reviews only – I’m sure as hell not making mine that way.

But it’s been so long since I actually read these books now, that my desire to write reviews for them has dwindled. I would be forcing myself to write them, especially since I didn’t particularly have much to say on any of them in the first place. So what’s the point?

That, paired with the absolute certainty that I just won’t have the time or motivation to review every single book once university starts…kind of solidifies it for me. Sure, I might have more spare time that I expect, but I am planning on throwing myself 100% into my studies and getting everything I can out of university. My hobbies must take a back seat in that. And if I only have a small amount of time per day/week to my own hobbies, I’d rather read books than feel I ought to review them.

So. From here on in, I shall only review the books I *actually* have thoughts on. I have monthly wrap ups on my channel where I’ll discuss my thoughts for every book I read, and all ratings will be shared on my Twitter and Instagram story. There’s also my Goodreads page, if you want to keep up with me as I go (but I literally only use goodreads to keep track and rate my books, nothing else!). And like I said, the reviews shall continue – just not for EVERY book! I’m happy to write full reviews for any books you see me mention and want to hear more about too 🙂

(basically a paragraph of self promo, wow)

To end this post, I’ll quickly update you on the ratings for all the books I’ve not reviewed:

The Secret History by Donna Tartt – 3 stars

Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling – 3 stars

Grimm’s Fairytales by Philip Pullman – 2 stars

Library of Greek Mythology by Apollodorus – 2.5 stars

So there we have it!

If you have anything to comment, please leave them down below. I’d love to know what you think to this small change of mine, and how you decide which books you review yourself.

Until next time…

Ashleigh

  1. Honestly, this is exactly what I did! I used to post every single day. Mostly reviews and I felt so much pressure to get all my reviews done! Then I started slowing down, I started making different kind of category’s that became really fun! Sure I mainly still book blog, but slowing down and doing different things and posting on my time was the best decision ever! I hope it helps you relax more! 😊

  2. I don’t review every single book I read either! I mean, when I just feel “meh” about a book and there’s nothing else to it, I don’t review it unless it was a review copy. I’m starting to schedule my posts a bit more, which I really like because then I know I’ll still look like I’m consistently posting even if I haven’t written anything in a week! It does get a little impersonal at times to schedule in advance. I’m about to start college, and I’m for sure not going to be reviewing as much. Like you said, I’m putting 100% into school!

    1. I ALWAYS used to schedule in advance, but found myself forgetting when posts would even be uploaded so 😆 I kind of like the laid back method I see other people using, so I’m trying it myself! Glad to hear you’re doing fab!!

  3. Ahh, that’s awesome that you’re changing things around. I used to feel such a huge pressure to read and review every single book – but you’re right, it can be quite time-consuming, and for me, uni, my health and my life will always be number one priority!

  4. Hope this works for you! I don’t write full reviews of every book I read either, though I do say a few sentences about what I thought in my wrap-ups. I’m beginning to wonder if I should keep doing this though. I like doing it, but I think it pressures me to DNF more books than I otherwise might.
