The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker |Telling a tale long lost in time

The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker - greek myth retelling

Goodreads | Book Depository •

The ancient stories are always male dominated, with women’s voices being pushed aside in favour of those “heroes” instead. Although let’s be real, my idea of what defines a hero definitely isn’t the type you find in many Greek myths. So imagine my excitement when finding out this book exists, giving another perspective – the women’s perspective – of the stories I’d read and loved before. Combining Homer’s The Iliad and The Trojan Women by Euripides, my anticipation for this book was REAL.

Probably more real than some of these guys’ “heroic” status.

Ohhh she said it. Continue reading The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker |Telling a tale long lost in time

Rings of Time by Renee Veillet | Outlander, but Canadian

Rings of Time

Following a girl called Emilie as she digs through her family history and inadvertently falls back in time to 1913, I’ve dubbed this one as a less dense version of Outlander – but Canadian. Although, come to think of it, you do still get a Scottish guy, so…

Reading this on a train journey home, I found myself whisked into a history I hadn’t previously seen much of. It’s not often you find books set in Canada, and it made a nice change compared to the usual US or London settings that seem to overwhelm books in general.

The Little Book Of Hygge by Meik Wiking | For when you need a hug in page-form

The Little Book of Hygge

This book has been on my radar for so long, and now that Wiking has brought out a second book, it was about time I got round to reading it. But hey, it just meant I had two of his books to binge, right? *shrugs*

The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson | How does a dreary world become so riveting?

The Final Empire

Thanks to a reading slump, it’s been so long since I’ve actually written a book review. I’m so glad this huge chunk of a book came along and gave me plenty of things to babble about.

Another series I managed to finish in 2016! I absolutely nailed my “finish some series” resolution from last year *high fives self*

It’s a good job I pushed myself to read this final book in the trilogy in December. I can tell I was going off the series. But more about that in a moment…

Rooting for the main character and her gentle personality in…Mansfield Park by Jane Austen

Mansfield Park.PNG

So for the Austentatious book club, December’s book of the month was Mansfield Park. I was considering skipping this month’s book, as at the start of the month I was feeling a bit slumpish when thinking of classics, but I decided to push ahead and read it alongside the audiobook version I found on Youtube.

Emma by Jane Austen | A really entertaining read, with some rather…interesting…characters

emma

Another one for the Austentatious Book Club!

I finished this just before the end of November, luckily. I don’t want to fall behind. Which is a very real struggle when I read classics so damn slowly. But I have my ways *insert mysterious eyebrow quirk*

Hint: Those ways are audiobooks. Shh don’t tell.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor | A weird & wonderful world that I have no chance of describing to you

daughter-of-smoke-and-bone

November seems to have been the month where I made my way through a lot of books I’d been meaning to get to for nearly a year. Example number 4 (after Stars Above, Between Shades of Gray and After You): Daughter of Smoke and Bone!

I GET IT. I FINALLY GET IT.

I get why everyone seems to know this book. Why it’s surrounded with hype.

And finally, I can be a part of that.

November Wrap Up – The weird month where I feel like I’m not reading, then end up reading more than usual

november-wrap-up

November. The month that begins with an onslaught of sporadic fireworks. The month where winter begins to settle in, grabbing the bones of us here in the UK, and lies with us for the long run. Fog and frost become a daily occurrence. We have only 6 hours or so of real daylight. Step outside and instantly your cheeks are flushed, fingers stiff, and you’ll be glad for extra layers of clothing.

But inside is a different matter. Inside is where I (and most bookworms) thrive on these freezing days. November was the month where my bedroom became my cocoon of warmth. At some point every day, you could find me wrapped in 5 layers of blankets, cuddling a hot water bottle and cat simultaneously while reading a book by fairy-light.

And so, November was a true bookworm month for me. Even if I didn’t read any more than usual, every comfort my heart longs for – blankets, hot water bottles, warm drinks while fog smothers the outside world – was available to me once again. Every moment of the day I wanted to get cosy and read. And now here we are – getting closer to Christmas, might I add.

So let’s see what November brought…

There’s also a video version of this post if you’d like to see, combined with my December TBR! Click here if you want to see!

PS. Do you like the new intro? Thought I’d try the scenic route rather than just throwing you all in. Let me know if you like!

*ahem* anyway

Illusion by Nadette Rae Rodgers | Everyone wants their dreams to come true…but not nightmares

lllusion

I’m actually really glad this was a short read, because I had a mess up with my reviews. Last Friday I finished a book, in time for me to write and schedule it on Monday when I had time. Only to then realise it’s an ARC, and the review was planned to go up mid December. Meaning there was no book to review this week.

Then lo and behold, this book turned up on my doorstep, my weekend plans were unexpectedly cancelled, and the planets aligned to let me read this book over the weekend.

So let’s talk about Illusion!
