Favourite underrated characters | Some characters just aren’t appreciated enough

underrated characters

We all have our favourite characters. More often than not, they’re one of the main set. After all, we do read about them the most.

But there’s always the characters that aren’t-quite-a-main-but-are-very-much-there. Or the side-characters, if you will. And a lot of the time, these characters go unappreciated. All the limelight goes on the main few, and so everyone else is left out.

Well NOT TODAY.

Today, we’re shining a light on those underrated characters.

So who are my favourites? Well, we have…

nick

From The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon.

Nick I guess could be classed as a main character, but he’s definitely not in it as much as I want him to be. He is so devoted to the people he cares for, and while he struggles to decide what is right at times, he always pulls through in the end. It really is just his unwavering loyalty and protection for Paige though that gets me.

I’ve not yet read The Song Rising (the most recent release), so for all I know he could go on a complete plot twist and turn into one of my most hated characters. Hopefully he won’t, but we’ll see. But for now, I adore him.

poppet and widget

From The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

One of my all-time favourite books, and without a doubt Poppet and Widget are my favourite characters. I don’t even know why! You know when your mind/heart/soul just looks at a character and goes “yep that one, we like that one with every fibre of our being” and then you ask why and it just sort of shrugs? – THAT HAPPENED.

I always just love how accepting they are and to me, they feel like really comforting characters. They’re somewhat whimsical (I mean, they were brought up in a magic circus) and spend their days training cats to do tricks. I literally have no other reasons for loving them, I just do.

nico

From the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus series’ by Rick Riordan.

Now, some may disagree that he’s an underrated character. So many people love him. But he’s a side character, and I personally don’t think there’s enough love for him out there.

This is one of those really contradicting cases where the character is really dark and angsty and wants to be left to his own devices, and yet somehow I just want to squish him. A literal child of hell, and I want to squish him? He’d hate it. I’d love it.

hagrid

From the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.

HAGRID IS UNDERRATED OK?

He is literally one of the most caring characters ever, which somehow gets him into every ounce of trouble possible. (Minor spoilers ahead, I won’t mention anything massive). He cried when he had to give up baby Harry. He adopted a three headed dog and named it Fluffy. He tried to keep a dragon is his tiny wooden hut. He held a funeral for a giant-ass spider. He invited the trio round for tea and gave them homemade toffee.

He’s basically a father figure to every student in Hogwarts who needs him, and to every animal he can possibly take care of. And not once does he expect anything in return.

briseis

From The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.

Another one I’m going to struggle to explain. We don’t see much of Briseis in this book, but from what you do see, she is one tough cookie. She lives in a world that is full of injustice, danger, and prejudices, but she manages. She learns to adapt to her situations, even learning a new language so she’d be able to understand. And her care for Patroclus was both hard and wonderful to see, because through everything she understood. I wish we saw more of Briseis in The Song of Achilles, because I feel like she’d have been one of favourite characters, full stop.

So those are my favourite underrated characters!

Are there any here that you love too?

  1. I’m with you on the Hagrid one! I think the fact that he only has a couple of scenes in each book (less so in the later books) is the reason he is considered an underrated character. That scene in the Deathly Hallows was heartbreaking, and it made me love him even more!

  2. Hagrid 100% agreed!

I also think Fleur is underrated!
SPOILERS > Harry saved her sister’s life (from something that wasn’t even life threatening) and he was forever in her favour! She risked her life to help Harry get to safety a few weeks before her wedding day by drinking the polyjuice potion! Then she agreed to have her wedding at the Weasley’s and not at her home, so that Harry could be there! She stood by Bill even after he was attacked by Fenrir! She was a triwizard champion, the Goblet obviously thought she was the strongest that entered! Honestly think she is a badass and loyal as hell!

    1. YESS FLEUR! She so overshadowed by the fact that Beauxbatons was made out to be a fluffy cutesy school only for girls frolicking around (even though the book clearly states there are boys there too). I’m glad she stayed in the story though and became part of the family 🙂

  3. Nick Nygard, tho. ❤

I doubt the happenings of The Song Rising have changed your opinion of Nick… they definitely didn’t for me, in fact I want to hug Nick all the more after this book.

  4. I haven’t read any books on this list so instead I’m going to comment on your redesign.

  5. I completely agree with you on both Hagrid and Nick! Nick has become one of my top favorites in The Bone Season and I so wish we saw more of him. I just love his character and the friendship between him and Paige. I saw in a comment that you finished The Song Rising – I cried so much through the last chapter, him hugging Paige while she’s breaking down and then them saying goodbye! 😭 Samantha Shannon broke my heart. It just sucks that we probably won’t see much of him in TBS4 because I’ll miss his character too much.

  6. Oooh I loved Poppet & Widget from The Night Circus – they were two of my favourite characters in that book! I guess Hagrid is somewhat underrated, I always think of him when thinking about Harry Potter, but I do agree that I would’ve loved so have seen more of him. I also think Luna is somewhat underrated, I would’ve loved if she appeared earlier in the series. This was such a fun post, Ashleigh 💕

  7. I totally agree with Ashleigh, Hagrid is indeed a very underrated character, I don’t why people fail to appreciate hagrid’s importance in harry’s life. Remember that scene where hagrid consults Harry when he was feeling down (HP4 book) , I love that line so much.

“I am what I am, an’ I’m not ashamed. ‘Never be ashamed,’ my ol’ dad used ter say, ‘there’s some who’ll hold it against you, but they’re not worth botherin’ with.”

Now that we are on the subject I would like to bring some lights on Remus lupin, he is one of my favorite character and he’s extremely underrated. we must agree 🙂 ahaha I mean he carries chocolate all the time, why would you overshadow him haha.

Ashleigh, I love your posts and this one in particular is excellent 🙂

    1. Such a good quote to sum him up! And something we should all live by. And yaaaas Lupin is so overshadowed! He seems to be barely in the books and movies, i’d have loved to see more of him.
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you liked it!
