Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (And Other Lies) // Oh The Many Thoughts

Feminists Don't Wear Pink (And Other Lies)

Goodreads | Book Depository

Picking up this book, I had high expectations. It became an event, with me buddy reading this with my friend Jess and setting time aside in my hectic uni reading schedule to make sure I read it.

And then…eh. I don’t know what happened. I have many, many thoughts.

Yes, Autumn has passed but I’m late and didn’t want to miss out this blog post, so here we are.

A few weeks ago I uploaded an Autumn Book Haul to my youtube channel, and while I didn’t want to repeat content on here, I still wanted to show you folks some of the books I’m excited about. So I thought I’d bring back the book haul highlights, where I show you a few of the books I’m most excited about from the haul!

If you’d like to watch the full video it will be at the end of this post, but if you want to hear about some of the books I’ve acquired lately and am most excited for, here we are!

Fantasy & Myths | My favourite books of 2018 so far

High angle showing an assortment of my favourite books of 2018 so far - the covers hidden - and my travel journal for decoration

Apparently, I’ve become a harsher reviewer in 2018. I say this because now we’re in the 7th month of the year, and I haven’t rated any books 5 stars yet. None. Zero. Zilch. Why?? It’s true, I’m reluctant to give anything less than a newfound all-time fave 5 stars, but you’d figure that somewhere in the 35 books I’ve read so far this year, I’d have found one. It seems not.

Despite this, there are a few that have still stood out to me this year and have gotten close to those treasured 5 stars. I don’t think anyone will be surprised to see there’s a theme of fantasy and ancient history. But these four books are the ones currently in the running for my favourites of 2018…unless I miraculously discover a whole suitcase full of new favourites in the next 5 months between now and the end of the year. But here, (a little over) halfway through, we have my current highlights!

The Little Book Of Hygge by Meik Wiking | For when you need a hug in page-form

The Little Book of Hygge

This book has been on my radar for so long, and now that Wiking has brought out a second book, it was about time I got round to reading it. But hey, it just meant I had two of his books to binge, right? *shrugs*

Night by Elie Wiesel | How a little book can say it all…

Night

I finally read the nonfiction book that has been on my radar for years. Quite randomly, actually. I wanted a really quick one evening, and since this was the shortest book on my shelves at that point, I picked it up.

SPQR by Mary Beard | So much to learn, so much to read…and I loved every second

SPQR

The sudden need to learn about ancient civilisations and expand my history further than the World Wars hit me HARD in May. And so here we are, with a huge chunk of a nonfiction book about ancient Rome.

Seeing how music played a big part in the war, with all the consequences too…Symphony for the City of the Dead by M.T. Anderson

Symphony for the city of the dead

So here’s a book I’d never heard anyone talk about before, but when Walker Books offer to send one my way – while it took me a while to decide – I gave it a chance.

I wasn’t sure how it would go, since I’m only just getting into nonfiction and this is over 400 pages, which will have been double the size of my longest nonfiction read so far. But I love learning about history, and so here we are today.

Delving into nonfiction to find out what actually happened all those years ago | Hiroshima by John Hersey

hiroshima

My first, proper nonfiction book of this year. And hopefully not my last.

I didn’t know how this was going to go. I don’t read nonfiction – why would I do that when I can read about magic and faeries and dragons in fantasy books? Buuuuut my love for history is gently drawing me into nonfiction, so here we are today.

Sitting down and listening to the woeful tale of World War II…The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman

the-complete-maus

Well this was meant to go up Wednesday. But things happened, and it meant this review had to be delayed slightly, since I had no time to write it. But never fear, it’s here now.

Of course I read this graphic memoir in January. I’ve been after it for months, and after finally getting it for Christmas, I wanted to read it as soon as possible. I would have read it immediately, but I wanted it to count towards my 2017 Goodreads challenge, not my 2016 one. Anyone else get that towards the end of a year?

Let’s dive into The Complete Maus!

YOU recommend! It’s time for you guys to take over my blog & make my formidable TBR even longer

you-reccomend

Guys, you’re taking over my blog.

At least for today, anyway.

This blog is basically one huge recommendation for reading. There’s an endless amount of books talked about on here, but even so, there’s even more I’ve not yet discovered.

Now, recently I posted my Reading Resolutions for 2017 video. For those who you who haven’t seen it (which you totally should, you know. Would be very much appreciated *winks*), three of the resolutions on there are about bringing a difference to my reading taste.

1. I hope to read more nonfiction

2. I hope to read more diversely

and 3. I hope to broaden my genres

Which means I’ve got a lot of book buying to do in 2017. And you know what I need to do that?

Your recommendations!
